The Pros & Cons of Sexual Expression

We live in an age where there are many a freedom and many benefits and consequences that come with this freedom. Over time, and with experience, we find ways to learn from and make the best of the freedom to choose. When it comes to the freedom of sexuality and expression of it, we must understand all that comes with it.

To truly know what it is to be free with ones sexuality and finding the way to express it, is an amazing thing. I've learned in my life the good and bad side of being aware of one's sexual proclivities. For someone to find out what they are attracted to and be able to be comfortable with it is a difficult path for some.

What I've come to understand about sexual freedom and expression is that it takes the ability to look deep inside yourself and ask "who, or what am I attracted to; what brings me pleasure and happiness?" Not all are able to do this. Ones, who have displayed difficulty in tapping into this inner self-awareness, are those who are not in acceptance for what they are drawn to. This could be because they have not found an understanding of why they have their attractions to something, or it is not socially acceptable to feel them.

One area where sexual freedom and expression has been most problematic is the viewing of pornography. Many people out there who may be uneducated about human nature will cast judgment upon those who choose to view it. It is a natural human behavior to find pleasure in the viewing of sexual activity. Recent studies have shown that pornography has been viewed by as many women as men. It's nothing to be ashamed of. In fact it is beneficial to relationships in many ways. I should really point out that a relationship that would not find issue with the viewing of porn should be one where there are no indications of adultery or lying. If you are in a trusting relationship, the positives you can achieve by viewing porn as a couple can be very useful in maintaining a healthy sex life.

Another area of where sexuality is of issue is for the homosexual population. I am of the belief that homosexuals do not choose who they are attracted to; they choose to live a lifestyle. They also choose to accept their sexual attractions, despite what may be popular or socially acceptable. I believe homosexuals should be praised for standing up for their beliefs and having the strength to accept who they really are in the face of being ostracized. I don't believe they should be treated differently because of what their sexual preference is. In fact I don't believe anyone should be. We ask the same of race, so why can't it be the same for sexual attraction/expression?.

So, it goes without saying, to deny ones human impulses is to deny that which makes us truly human. Those who choose not to accept them may find the mental deterioration that can come from sexual repression. There lies happiness in finding and accepting your inner desires, just as long as you demonstrate them with consideration for others.
