How To Clean Makeup Brushes

The right tools make your makeup application so much easier and make all the difference to the end result. An alternative to sponge applicators that come with eyeshadow compacts, makeup brushes are much softer and sweep gently over the skin. They provide exceptional blending qualities and precise application.

Brushes made from synthetic hair can be purchased from many retail stores, usually in a pack and are very economical. For long term use, natural-hair brushes are preferred to synthetic ones, as they last much longer, are softer on the skin and tend to offer better blending properties, but they are more expensive. Your budget will often determine which ones you choose.

Whichever type of brushes you opt to use, you will want to keep them looking and performing their best, for optimum makeup application and to get the longest possible shelf-life out of your brush set. In order to do this, good maintenance of your makeup brushes is essential. This includes cleaning.

Makeup brushes must be clean for your health and for great makeup results. Poorly-cleaned brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria and will surely result in poorly-applied makeup. So what is the best method for cleaning makeup brushes? Let's explore the best advice.

Brushes should be washed on a regular basis. Natural-hair brushes are best shampooed with a gentle shampoo formulation, followed by conditioner to keep them soft. Synthetic brushes can be washed with soapy water. Be sure to use warm or tepid water, to avoid overheating the glue in the brush head, or damaging the delicate bristles. Rinse extremely well after shampooing and following conditioning treatment.
In between uses, it is advisable to spray them with rubbing alcohol. This will help to purify them from any bacteria or infection; removing makeup and sanitising the bristles in preparation for the next use.

To dry your brushes, be sure to gently squeeze out excess water and press the bristles into shape. For best results, dry brushes overnight on a flat surface covered with a towel, turning them over once, for even drying and airing. Drying with heat is definitely not recommended, because the bristles will eventually dry out and you risk melting the glue inside the brush head, which will cause the bristles to fall out. Drying in an upright position will risk the bristles bending out of shape, and will fail to dry out the brush effectively, as the water can seep into the brush head and spread bacteria. Once completely dry, store makeup brushes safely in a soft brush roll. This will protect them from being bent out of shape against each other or other makeup items, and from getting dirty after all your hard work washing them!.

How often you wash your brushes will be determined by how often you use them. Professionals need to wash their brushes after each job and always clean with alcohol in between clients, since the brushes are used on multiple faces. Sharing any tools that have not been properly washed and/or sanitised is not recommended, as this increases the possibility of spreading infection from one person to another. If your brushes are for your own individual use only and are used every day, washing at least once a week is highly recommended, with a spray of alcohol or brush cleaner after each use.

If these guidelines are observed, your makeup brushes should serve you well for some time; providing you with the best possible makeup application.
